Dialogue Dinners

A Signature History Cambridge Program

At History Cambridge, we believe that history is more than just dates and documents; it is the shared thread that binds us together. In a city as diverse and fast-moving as ours, it can be easy to lose track of our neighbors and the stories they carry. To bridge this gap, we have launched Dialogue Dinners, a signature History Cambridge program designed to catalyze connections through the power of community-centered history.

The Power of a Shared Table

A Dialogue Dinner is a simple but powerful experience. We gather around twelve people—eleven guests and one facilitator—around a single table to share a meal and a conversation. Unlike a typical dinner party where guests might break off into small side chats, a Dialogue Dinner centers on the group as a whole. Every story shared is heard by everyone at the table. Guided by three carefully crafted questions, guests share personal and local histories, moving from individual experiences to a deeper understanding of our collective identity.

“It was valuable just to be in dialogue with neighbors.
This builds the ‘community’ that we are all afraid of losing due to change.”

Building Our Shared Future

This initiative is a cornerstone of our preparation for Cambridge 400. As we approach the city’s 400th anniversary in 2030, our goal is to strengthen the social fabric of every neighborhood. We believe that to face the challenges of the future, we must first know our neighbors and see ourselves in Cambridge’s shared narrative. Whether you have lived here for five generations or five minutes, your story is a vital part of the DNA of this city.

“I enjoyed hearing my neighbor’s story and learning more about Cambridge.”

The Road to 400

In honor of the upcoming anniversary, we have set an ambitious goal: to hold 400 Dialogue Dinners by the end of 2030. These dinners will be held in homes, community spaces, libraries, parks, and neighborhoods across the city, meeting people where they are. Each meal is an investment in the trust and relationship-building that Cambridge needs to thrive for the next century.

Be a Host

We cannot reach our goal of 400 dinners alone. We are looking for community members to partner with us as hosts and facilitators. You don’t need to be a historian to lead a dinner; you just need a passion for Cambridge and a desire to listen. We provide comprehensive training on all aspects of the program, from managing the “active listening” format to choosing themes that resonate with your neighborhood. By hosting, you are helping to ensure that every voice in Cambridge is heard and valued.
