Research Intern Opportunity

We're hiring a paid ($3,500) intern to help us with research and programming around Fort Washington Park in the Cambridgeport neighborhood.

Built under the direction of George Washington in November 1775, Fort Washington Park is the oldest surviving fortification from the American Revolutionary War and the only surviving fortification from the Siege of Boston. In 1857, the City of Cambridge created the park, and it was rededicated in 2009.

At present, the park is an under-used and under-appreciated public space. We aim to convene community conversations about how it might better serve the neighborhood while retaining its sense of history. We hope to facilitate a conversation between the neighborhood and the City to transform it into a more vibrant resource.

This is funded by our grant from the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati.

Intern responsibilities include:

  • Compile primary and secondary research on the park to add to a “History Hub” on our website, creating a landing page for all things Fort Washington
  • Meet and collaborate with community partners
  • Coordinate the three projected public events
  • Write at least two blog posts on our website about the project and their experience

Meetings and events may take place onsite or virtually.

We welcome applications from individuals of all backgrounds and experiences. Members of underrepresented groups, minorities, women, veterans, persons with disabilities, and all persons committed to diversity and inclusive excellence are strongly encouraged to apply. This internship was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati.

Apply by January 27th 2023

Open internships will be posted here, and are usually announced at the beginning of the calendar year. We have limited capacity and resources to support internships and typically we work with only one graduate student pursuing a graduate degree in history or a related field.

In support of our effort to make history accessible to everyone, all internships with History Cambridge are paid positions.

Interested in helping to develop and fund more internship opportunities at History Cambridge? We’d love to talk. Please get in touch with Executive Director Marieke Van Damme at mvandamme@historycambridge.org.
