Historical Sketch
The Whittemore family of Cambridge traces its origins back to Thomas Whittemore (1593–1660/61), who came to North America from England in the seventeenth century. In fact, according to family tradition, all Whittemores in North America trace their ancestry back to Thomas Whittemore, who was allegedly the only Whittemore ever to migrate from England to the New World. The Whittemores of Cambridge also trace their ancestry to Samuel Whittemore (1694–1793), the oldest known combatant in the American Revolutionary War, who is commemorated with a monument in Arlington, Massachusetts.
Closer to the present, William Stewart Whittemore was born in Boston on August 13, 1882, the son of William Richardson Whittemore (September 7, 1855 – August 1, 1935), a bank employee, and Isabella Stewart Whittemore. Inspired by his uncle, Frederick, he became a physician, studying medicine at Harvard University from 1904 to 1908. Upon graduating, he first practiced at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston before settling in Cambridge in 1910, with a private practice in Brattle Square and an affiliation with Mount Auburn Hospital.
That same year, he married Alice Stearns Babson (born March 28, 1884), the sister of businessman and philanthropist Roger Babson (who would go on to found Babson College in Massachusetts and Webber College [now Webber International University] in Florida, the latter being the school which his niece, Alice and William Stewart Whittemore’s daughter Eleanor, would eventually attend). They had three children, Frederick Webster Whittemore (born October 23, 1912), Richard Howland Whittemore (born September 23, 1916), and Eleanor Stearns Whittemore (born May 20, 1920).
(William Stewart and Alice Babson Whittemore were both members of the Cambridge Historical Society since 1932, but resigned their membership 1950.)
William Stewart Whittemore died on April 24, 1962; his wife Alice on May 14, 1967.
Eleanor Stearns Whittemore grew up in her parents’ house on Meadow Way in Cambridge. She attended the Buckingham School, graduating in 1937, and then attended Bradford Junior College in Haverhill, Massachusetts, from 1937 to 1939. She went on to study for a bookkeeping certificate at Webber College in Babson Park, Florida (the business school for women created by her uncle, Roger Babson), in 1939–1940. She married Frederick Herbert Jackson, who had studied at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, in 1942 and had two children by him: David and Isabel. For a while (certainly in 1977), they resided in Wilmette, Illinois. Eleanor Stearns Whittemore Jackson worked as a church and school secretary in Cambridge. She died on October 9, 2005.

Scope and Content Note
The Whittemore Family Papers consist of a collection of letters sent by William Stewart Whittemore (1882–1962) to his parents during a trip to Europe in 1903, as well as scrap books, photo albums, diaries, and letters by Eleanor Stearns Whittemore (1920–2005), mostly dating to the second half of the 1930s and early 1940s. Of particular note are a travel diary, a photo album, and letters from a cruise Eleanor Whittemore took (accompanied by her aunt Hannah) aboard the S.S. Laconia in 1937, which took her to Iceland, Scandinavia, and the Soviet Union. In addition, several digital copies of photographs of family members, including William Stewart Whittemore’s parents, William Richardson Whittemore (1855–1935) and Isabella Stewart Whittemore, are included.
