Historical Sketch:
Postcards, also known as postal cards or private mailing cards, were first issued in Austria in 1869. Other European countries and Canada quickly followed suit, and the United States issued their first official postal cards in 1873. Post cards became a way to share a written description of your travels away from home, while including a visual depiction as well. The following year, the standard size of postal cards was established as 3 ½”x 5 ½”.
From the “Pioneer Period” (1873-1897), to the first realphoto postcard in 1899, to the “Undivided Back Era” (1901-1907) and the “Divided Back Era” (1907-1915), to the “Photochromes” (1945 to the present), postcards have undergone numerous design changes including the location of the message area, the printing processes, and the use of color. The undivided and divided eras signified the switch to writing on the back rather than the front of the postcards.
The postcards in this collection include a variety of types of postcards such as real photo postcards, photochromes (1945-present), and “linen” (1930-1944) postcards. “Linen” postcards were not printed on linen, but were printed on high rag paper with a texture similar to that of woven cloth. This material also allowed for the use of brighter, more vibrant dyes in the printing process. This collection includes a number of examples of the various techniques and styles of postcards through the years, and illustrates how the cards were used at the time through the mailed postcards.

The Cambridge Historical Society’s Postcard Collection contains postcards dating circa 1898 to circa 2010. The bulk of the postcards appear to be from the period 1905-1930. This collection includes images of monuments, historic sites and houses, local universities and schools, public institutions, bridges and roadways, etc., as well as the destruction caused by the 1938 hurricane.
The first five series are based on the geographic subdivisions of Cambridge, as outlined by the Cambridge Historical Commission’s Survey of Architectural History in Cambridge. Series VI contains postcards relevant to Cambridge history but which do not depict a Cambridge location. Although there are currently no postcards in Series III, East Cambridge, the region has been included to allow for future expansion of the collection. Where duplicates of postcards existed, one unused and one used sample were maintained in the collection. On the accompanying list, an asterisk (*) marks those postcards that have messages written on them.
Series I, Old Cambridge, (ca.1898-2010) consists of postcards of locations within this region including Harvard University buildings, the Cambridge Commons, Harvard Square, Christ Church, the Washington Elm, Longfellow House, the Hooper-Lee-Nichols House, and many others. There are three postcards depicting destruction from the Great New England Hurricane of 1938 within this series.
Series II, Cambridgeport, (ca.1906-1980) consists of postcards of locations within this region including the City Hall, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Central Square, the Harvard Bridge, Magazine Beach, and others.
Series III. East Cambridge: No postcards currently.
Series IV, Mid-Cambridge, (ca.1905-1980) consists of postcards of locations within this region including the Cambridge High and Latin Schools, Rindge Manual Training School, the Public Library, and others.
Series V, North Cambridge, (ca.1907-1929) consists of postcards of locations within this region including Fresh Pond.
Series VI, Cambridge Related, (ca.1905-1960) consists of postcards of locations or organizations that have Cambridge connections including the Harvard Stadium in Allston, Harvard Medical School in Allston, the Nichols’ House in Salem, Massachusetts, a Longfellow monument in Portland, Maine, and others. Also included in this series is a Souvenir Folder of Cambridge. This folder of postcards, published by the Tichnor Brothers of Boston, MA, includes images of the Longfellow House, the Kresge Auditorium at MIT, various Cambridge bridges, and other locations.
