05/17/18: Past — Listening is Emotional Labor: For History and Culture Workers

We want to thank all of the listeners who participated in Diana Lempel’s workshop, part of our “doing” history series.

Participants worked in breakout groups to talk about skills in active listening, body language, eye contact, how to interpret and participate in a in-person conversation, and how to be a listener who builds rapport, engages empathically, and brings all these precepts of active, engaged listening to their work in cultural institutions.

We hope everyone left the workshop more prepared to “do” history and with a deeper appreciation for the art of listening; we know we did!

A workshop for professional and nonprofessional listeners in the history and culture fields (museum and library staff, oral historians, public historians, family historians, and genealogists) using tools from oral history and everyday life, to help you value the expertise that listening requires, and set boundaries for yourself as a listener. And refreshments! You will leave with some concrete strategies, some inspiration for exploring listening as a creative practice, and a new community of fellow listeners.
