Historical Note: Cambridge, Massachusetts, of Middlesex County, was settled shortly after Puritans arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. Cambridge, or Newe Towne, as it was originally named, was chosen for its proximity to Boston and ideal location on the Charles River, making it convenient for trade, defense and transportation purposes. The name Newe Towne was changed in 1638 to Cambridge, as a tribute to the University in Cambridge, England.
Cambridge thrived as an agricultural outpost eight miles by road from Boston, which was then the capital of the American colonies. Originally a much larger expanse of land (and once comprised of neighboring areas later known as Newton, Brighton, West Cambridge and Lexington), Cambridge now encompasses about seven square miles. It officially became a city in 1846, bringing together three villages: Cambridgeport, Old Cambridge and East Cambridge.
Cambridge is home to several institutions for higher education, notably Harvard College, founded in 1636, and the Massachusetts Institute for Technology, founded in 1861. Much of the city and business life revolves around four major centrally located squares: Central Square, Harvard Square, Kendall Square, and Porter Square. An estimated 100,000 people reside in Cambridge today—a population known for its diversity and multiculturalism.

Arrangement:
This collection is arranged in three series:
I. Maps, 1634-2005
II. Plans, 1775-2007
III. Dana family maps and plans, 1760-1912
Scope and Content: This collection contains maps and plans chiefly pertaining to Cambridge, Massachusetts and surrounding areas in Middlesex County, such as Boston and the Charles River. The cartographic materials span over four centuries, from 1635 to 2005. The bulk of maps and plans date from between 1850 to modern day. Most of the maps and plans relate to Cambridge.
The maps and plans range in terms of size, scale, material, condition, and content. Subject matter and level of detail varies, but can include street and landmark names, topographical information, depictions of buildings and structures, property lines and census data, cultural and societal contextual information and other information. Some maps and plans are original, hand-drawn or printed versions, while others are facsimiles, tracings, or photocopies. In some cases maps were removed from published volumes; others were printed individually. A considerable portion of the collection has been digitized. Some are very fragile and require special handling under supervision.
Series I, Maps, 1635-2005, represent various areas in or near Cambridge, Boston, and Middlesex County, Massachusetts, however the majority of the maps are Cambridge related. Within the series, maps are separated by geographical area and then organized chronologically. Early 17th century maps depict Cambridge as it was first settled, while 18th century maps depict Cambridge as a cluster of developments in the village center and its outskirts, near geographical landmarks such as Fresh Pond, Salt Meadow, and the Charles River. The majority of these maps are hand-rendered and in fragile condition. Many of the 19th century maps are printed as the result of official land surveys, representing Cambridge’s growth and official status as a city in the mid 1800s. Twentieth century maps depict Cambridge in more detail, as it is known in modern day. Maps of Boston, surrounding areas of Middlesex County, and Massachusetts, 1722-1927, range greatly in topic, from depictions of the Revolutionary War period to 20th century city planning.
Series II, Plans, 1775-2007, are primarily made up of plans in and around Cambridge, and several other areas near Boston and the Charles River. Most Cambridge plans show residences, historical homes and sites in Old Cambridge, Cambridgeport areas and beyond. One such historical landmark is the Hooper Lee Nichols House, which today is home to the Cambridge Historical Society, in what was formerly known as Old Cambridge. Charles River plans, 1867-1967, illustrate the development of the bridges and parks surrounding the Charles River area. There are also several plans created by Lois Lilley Howe, a renowned Cambridge architect, who was the first woman to be elected a fellow of the American Institute of Architects.
Series III, Dana Family maps and plans, 1760-1912, n.d., include cartographic materials from Francis Dana’s personal collection, as well as other members of his family. Francis Dana (1743-1811), was a Harvard graduate and lawyer who lived in Cambridge for much of his life. He became politically active as a delegate for the Continental Congress during America’s fight for independence. He also served in the Massachusetts Congress and was elected to Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts. Later in his career, Dana was instrumental in the development of a bridge connecting Cambridgeport to Boston, where the Longfellow Bridge stands today. The Dana materials consist of individual items and two bound volumes of Francis Dana’s personally drawn maps and plans of his Cambridge properties and land; some of these plans served as deeds.
