New England Folk Music Archives founder Betsy Siggins (nee Minot) was born on October 1, 1939, the daughter of naval engineer Francis Minot and Ellen Le Maire. Siggins grew up in Cotuit, MA with her half sister Agnes Olney Minot Gilmore and half brother Francis Minot Jr. (by Francis’ first wife Isabella Quackenbush Minot), and adopted sister Muriel Minot. Siggins’ mother left the family when Siggins was young, and her father was remarried to his third wife Bernice Dubb Jackson, a concert pianist. Siggins’ family has long had prestigious ties to New England. Isaiah Thomas, patriot printer and 18th century ancestor of Siggins, established the newspaper The Massachusetts Spy, which he used to rally support for the cause of American independence. Richard Olney, a prominent political figure and Siggins’ great-grandfather, was elected to the Massachusetts legislature in 1873, appointed U.S. attorney general by Grover Cleveland in 1893, and served as U.S. Secretary of State from 1895 to 1897. Siggins’ grandfather, physician George Richards Minot, was elected Professor of Medicine at Harvard University in 1928, and Director of the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory and Visiting Physician to the Boston City Hospital. In 1934 he was awarded, along with George Hoyt Whipple, the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his work on treatment for anemia. Siggins’ fourth cousin Agnes Abbot was a prominent painter and taught art at Wellesley College for many years. Ship designer, engineer, and oceanographer Francis Minot (Siggins’ father) was the founder and director of the Ocean Resources Institute of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He designed the research vessel Atlantis I, the first American ship built specifically for research in marine biology, marine geology, and physical oceanography. Minot attended Harvard University and graduated from the M.I.T. Naval Architecture School.
Siggins attended the Cherry Lawn boarding school in Darien, CT and participated in the Gilbert and Sullivan Players group during the summers. She attended Boston University in 1958 and it was there that she became a part of the burgeoning musical community in Cambridge. Siggins was a founding member of Club 47, where Joan Baez, Eric von Schmidt, and Jim Kweskin helped to launch the folk revival. She witnessed firsthand the infamous evening concert at Newport 1965, where her friend Bob Dylan “went electric.” She was there when photographer Dick Waterman rediscovered and brought to the North blues performers Son House and Mississippi John Hurt. Music journalist Robert Shelton corresponded frequently with Siggins in order to write the New York updates on the “Cambridge scene.” Siggins married Charles River Valley Boys musician and neuro-pharmacologist Robert (Bob) Siggins in 1960 and afterward became involved full-time with Club 47. She gave birth to daughter Leah Siggins (now Ridpath) in 1965. When Club 47 closed in 1968, Siggins went on to work with many nonprofits, including aiding Ralph Rinzler, who founded the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife in Washington, DC, patterned after the earlier festivals he had produced at Newport. Siggins’ second husband, Benno Schmidt, was president of Yale University from 1986 until 1992. After her divorce from Schmidt in 1979, Siggins moved to New York City where she lived with partner Hugh McGraw. During nearly 20 years in New York, she founded programs for homeless people with AIDS and worked at various soup kitchens and food pantries. Throughout this time she was always able to call on folk friends from Cambridge days to perform at benefit concerts. She later returned to Club 47’s successor and parent organization, the Passim Folk Music and Cultural Center, where she served as executive director for 12 years (1997-2009) before founding the archives. Siggins was one of the first people to connect social problems requiring money and awareness with musical artists who shared her concerns, and she continues to do so to this day.

Subseries A, Family papers, 1714-2006, consists of clippings, letters and photographs connected to portions of Siggins’ professional life unrelated to music, as well as materials relating to several generations of Siggins’ family. General biographical and genealogical material includes Siggins’ family tree; biographical sketches of the Minot family; short biographical sketches from various websites of George Richards Minot, Richard Olney, and Agnes Olney; obituaries of George Richards Minot, Agnes Abbot, and Francis Minot Jr.; newspaper clippings regarding the Minot family, Richard Olney, and Benno Schmidt; family financial records; and a genealogical packet mailed to Siggins from the American Antiquarian Society. Family correspondence is mainly between Richard Olney and wife Agnes Park Thomas. Published biographies about and monographs by Isaiah Thomas, Richard Olney, and George Richards Minot have been removed from the collection but copies of the inscription and title pages were retained for reference purposes. Isaiah Thomas’ memoir has also been retained. Siggins’ time spent working in Manhattan soup kitchens is represented in Subseries A, and there are several fliers and handouts regarding hunger benefits and articles about her work with One City Café, a restaurant that employed workers who were formerly homeless. Also included are a postcard from Siggins’ mother, a postcard from her father sent to her while she was at the Cherry Lawn School, and a postcard with artwork created as a gift for Siggins representing the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Atlantis I. There are letters to Siggins from friends and family, including a letter from producer Robert L. Jones and a letter from Joan Baez’s sister Pauline Marden. There is a Valentine’s Day card from Siggins, Muriel, and Francis Minot to Siggins’ mother and a telegram from Siggins wishing her mother a happy birthday. Francis Minot’s papers include a draft of his book, Atlantis; correspondence with a potential publisher for the book; two publications on oceanography by Minot, one for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and one for The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers; several letters of application and recommendation for a job Minot was pursuing in the U.S. Navy; an architectural sketch of a sailboat by Minot; and articles published on Minot after his death. Also included are transcripts of Minot’s grades while at Harvard and his professional resume. The series contains a recipe book compiled by Siggins’ grandmother Agnes Olney, as well as a copy of a memoir written by Siggins’ half sister Agnes Olney Minot Gilmore entitled Growing up in Boston, 1915-1934.
Subseries B, Family photographs and prints, 1800-2000, contains several photographs of Siggins’ family, including Siggins as a child and adolescent, Francis Minot, Agnes Olney Minot, George Richards Minot, Agnes Abbott, Bernice Minot, Leah Siggins Ridpath as a child and adult, Bob Siggins, Benno Schmidt, Hugh McGraw, family friends Betty and Leonard Peck, Siggins’ former mother-in-law Boots Schmidt, brother-in-law Russell Schmidt, sisters-in-law Kate and Martha Schmidt, step-daughter Betsey Schmidt, Siggins’ childhood friends Susan McNutt, Sally Ropes, Linda Rothschild, Prudence Lloyd, Leonore DeMattos, Polly Bradley, and Kathy Uenoyama, and soup kitchen employees Michael Fields and Marcella Clark. There are also negatives, some with corresponding photos, of the Minot family home in Falmouth, MA. The house was built by George Richards Minot for his wife, Agnes Olney, and the images taken by Francis Minot.
TRANSFERRED TO UMASS AMHERST — Series II, CLUB 47, CLUB PASSIM, AND GENERAL MUSIC, consists of clippings, publications, promotional materials, posters, musical scores, photographs, sound recordings, and ephemera relating to the folk music scene in Cambridge and elsewhere.

There are several posters and broadsides, including one for Dylan’s documentary Don’t Look Back, and Humbead’s Revised Map of the World, a humorous illustration showing geographic areas in the United States with strong musical communities. Included are several articles regarding Siggins’ return to the Cambridge folk music scene as director of Club Passim, on specific musical performances, regarding musicians not associated with the club, and a series of articles on an incident of police brutality against musician Jackie Washington. There are pages of music and lyrics written by Richard Fariña, an ink sketch by musician Julian Dawson, drawn for Siggins, and lyrics to the song Trials, Troubles, Tribulations, that Siggins recorded with Maria Muldaur for the album Potty Pie. There are also several music publications, including several issues of the Broadside, a publication on folk music in the Boston area, The Listening Room, a zine put out for Club Passim, and the Newport Folk Festival Program. There is a copy of America’s Greatest Teen-Age Recording Stars with several musician autographs.
Subseries B, Scrapbooks, was originally comprised of five scrapbooks: Club 47 Era Photographs and Documents (1958-1968); Club 47 Days: Images, Calendars, Show Fliers; Joan Baez and Bob Dylan; Betsy Siggins and Sometimes Bob; and The Archive Project: Folk Music: Through the Lens of Melissa Bugg. The scrapbooks were disbound and foldered in original order. Items originally found in the scrapbooks include typewritten lyrics by Bob Dylan, written late one night in Siggins’ apartment; a short story, The Monterey Fair, written by Richard Fariña; a letter complete with illustration from Joan Baez to Siggins; a 1962 Time magazine article on Joan Baez; a 1963 Newsweek article “I Am My Words” regarding Bob Dylan; a number of other articles; promotional flyers and broadsides for Club 47, Club Passim, and other music venues; financial documents; letters to Siggins, Club 47, and Club Passim; and several photographs of Siggins and of various musicians, many of which were taken by photographer Charlie Frizzell.
Subseries C, Photographs, contains a number of photos of musicians taken both with and without Siggins, at Club 47, Club Passim, the Newport Folk Festival, Brandeis Folk Festival, Monterey Folk Festival, and elsewhere. There are a large number of photographs taken by photographer Charlie Frizzell.
