History
From 1958-94 Chez Jean, one of the early authentic French restaurants in Cambridge, "where legions of Harvard men first tasted Canard a l'orange", operated on this site. Jean was run by Jean-Baptiste LaGouarde, who trained at an older Harvard Square spot, Henry IV, when a small Francophile enclave existed around Harvard Square. Jean's old world fare and vibe lost favor with diners in the '90s, and the space was sold to chef Paul O'Connel. Neighbors, Harvard profs, chefs and foodies soon flocked here for the pressed Cuban sandwiches, Mohitos, and inventive pre-fixe menus in its funky-romantic atmosphere. It's remained an acclaimed and beloved place since.
