Other Replications
At 1564 Massachusetts Ave., the developer went through the Commission’s approval process to take off a rear ell of a 19th century Greek Revival house and build some townhouses adjacent to it. “By the time we spotted it,” Sullivan said, “they had removed all of the original house except the eight-inch-thick front façade and we stopped the project.” The remaining façade was razed as a public safety hazard, and after eighteen months the developer agreed to replicate the originally-permitted design, including the pedimented Greek Revival façade, instead of the much denser as-of-right project he hoped to build.
