About History Cambridge
History Cambridge engages with our city to explore how the past influences the present in order to shape a better future. Just as every person in Cambridge has knowledge about its history, every person in Cambridge is a steward of Cambridge history. We inspire people to be caretakers of the city and its history.
About the Role
History Cambridge seeks a graduate-level intern to research the labor (both paid and unpaid) performed by women and BIPOC Cantabrigians during the period of the American Revolution.
Intern Duties
- Conduct primary and secondary research about the experiences of women and people of color (both enslaved and free) in Cambridge during the Revolutionary period, particularly their contributions to the labor necessary to create and support the military and political efforts of the Revolution.
- Meet and collaborate with other organizations in the city doing similar research (Cambridge Black History Project, Cambridge Historical Commission, Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site, Harvard University, and others) to coordinate and amplify past and on-going research.
- Create a walking tour of relevant sites in Cambridge, to be given (if possible), as well as permanently accessible on our website.
- Write at least two blog posts on our website about their research experience.
- Help identify a speaker (or speakers) for a History Café public program about the topic.
Hours + Compensation
- The intern is expected to work around 10 hours a week February-June 2022
- (Virtual) meetings with staff and colleagues at other institutions take place primarily between the hours of 9AM-5PM Eastern Time, Mon-Fri, with at least one evening event required (History Café)
- A stipend of $3,500 will be awarded at the completion of the project.
Qualifications
- Must have demonstrated education or knowledge of African American history/studies, women’s history, and/or the American Revolution
- Exceptional research and writing skills acquired through graduate-level coursework
- An appreciation of the history of Cambridge, Massachusetts and the field of public history
- Experience working in a team setting as well as independently; ability to meet deadlines; detail-oriented; strong organizational and communication skills required
- Ability to attend virtual meetings with History Cambridge staff and other organizations in Cambridge remotely
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the intern must be able to work remotely. Knowledge of Cambridge, Massachusetts history is preferred, but not required.
